Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is the commonest paediatric endocrine disorder in Malawi. Chronic diseases such as diabetes are frequently neglected in resource limited settings. The life expectancy from diagnosis of T1DM has been reported to be as low as 1 year in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
